BLOG-CATION 2017

Last summer, towards the end of my third pregnancy I started blogging like crazy. I blogged so much that I had well over twenty finished blogs saved in my "Drafts" folder ready to post every week. I was blogging like crazy because I wasn't sure when I would go into labor and I knew that once I did, I wouldn't be able to keep up with my weekly posts while adjusting to a family of five and being mommy to three kids under the age of three. Since then I've blogged and kept up with my weekly post but recently life has been a little hectic and due to certain circumstances, I haven't had a lot of time to fully concentrate on my blog so I have decided to take a temporary blog-cation aka a vacation from posting blogs (I'm not sure if blog-cation is even a work but that's what I'm calling it!).

I have several blogs I have started but haven't had time to finish and several ideas for other blogs so don't worry, I will be back. By taking this blog-cation I plan to spend some time with my family and relax now that my husband is on summer vacation so I get some extra help around the house. I also plan to work on blogs in my free time to get a nice selection saved up in my "Drafts" folder again to share with you when I come back. I do not know exactly how long my blog-cation will be so please follow me by e-mail or google plus (both are located on the right sidebar ) so you will get a notification that I've blogged again when I return. Thank you and I look forward to posting again soon! In the mean time, feel free to browse through my previous blog posts, share them with friends or on Pinterest and leave comments as I will be checking in.

To kick off this blog-cation, here are a couple picture of my family and I on our recent vacation to Myrtle Beach, SC. This is the first time my little ones have been to a beach and boy did they have fun! My mom, my sister, my brother and my mother-in-law joined us on our vacation. Our vacation consisted of plenty of beach time, visiting Broadway at the Beach, the Boardwalk and putt-putt golf. We attempted to go crab hunting but didn't have any luck although we caught some fish and a creature that reminded me of a sand mouse. While in Myrtle Beach we saw a huge sea creature - maybe a manatee?, a baby shark just off the shore, several baby fish, and we even came across some coral full of baby sea crabs. A few of the restaurants we ate at included The American Tap House, Sweet Carolina's BBQ, Landshark Bar & Grill and Fuddruckers. We also enjoyed a lovely dinner show at the Pirates Voyage. There are tons of things to do at Myrtle Beach and as  you can tell by the pictures, we enjoyed ourselves! Until next time, Happy BLOG-CATION 2017.

Alphabet Dating - All about C Date Ideas

Alphabet Dating, Alphabet Dates, All about C Date Ideas, Letter dates, letter dating, C dates, Things to do that start with C, Letter C date ideas, all about C, all about letter C, Date Ideas, A to Z Dates, A to Z Date Ideas, third anniversary,
For our one year anniversary (paper), I decided I was going to start a new tradition by making my husband an A to Z Wedding Anniversary Date Book. The date book helps us keep track of what we do on our wedding anniversaries and acts as a scrapbook. The A to Z Anniversary tradition goal is to plan everything about your wedding anniversaries around the letter that goes with that year.

For our "All about C" date aka our third anniversary we drove our Car to the nearest City. We enjoyed a late lunch at The Chop House where we ordered Teriyaki Chicken and a Grilled Chicken Sandwich. We then watched Baywatch at a Cinemark theater. After the movie, we headed to Crank & Boom Ice Cream Lounge where we shared a sampler flight of Ice Cream. Once we arrived home I enjoyed a glass of Pink Catawba wine. As far as gifts go, my husband got me two pairs of suede booties that I've been wanting (yes, suede is a form of leather and leather is the tradition gift for three years) and I got my husband a watch box and I made him a Card Game to go along with our "All about C" theme.

Third Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas - Leather

*Affiliate Links are used in this post

Third Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas - Leather, Third Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas, 3rd anniversary gift ideas, leather gifts, leather gift ideas, wedding anniversary gifts, wedding anniversary, third wedding anniversary, leather anniversary, gift ideas, leather, 3rd anniversary, 3rd wedding anniversary, 3rd wedding gift ideas, 3rd wedding gift ideas for him, 3rd wedding gift ideas or her, leather gifts, leather items, leather gifts for him, leather gifts for her, leather gifts for anniversary

My husband's and my third wedding anniversary is coming up at the end of May and I got to thinking about gifts. The traditional wedding anniversary gift for three years is leather, the modern gift is crystal/glass and the flower is sunflowers. I like to try to get or make a gift that relates to the traditional wedding anniversary gift so I began to brain storm ideas. It didn't take me long to come up with an idea but I decided to keep going and ended up turning it into a blog. I know you don't have to base your gifts around the traditional/modern gift recommendations so I included a couple other gift ideas in the last paragraph. Maybe giving gifts isn't your thing and thats okay to but my husband and I like to at least attempt relating one gift to the traditional wedding anniversary gift. We haven't been married to long but so far we have kept it simple by going on a date and exchanging gifts at some point. Hopefully this list helps you come up with something great for your third wedding anniversary!

Leather (or fake Leather) Gifts:

There are tons of items out there made out of leather, it all just depends on what you want to get. If you don't like any of the leather gift ideas then try using the modern gift idea - crystal/glass or sunflowers whether it's a picture of sunflowers, and item with them on it or the actual flower. You can also get creative and do a play on words kind of like I did for our second anniversary (*see below) or come up with something that has to do with the number three such as three DVD's, three new shirts, three planned date nights or a three day vacation. Hopefully this list helps you come up with a great gift for your husband. Feel free to comment below with other leather gift ideas!

Several other restaurants, local or chain, hold special deals such as Kid's Nights throughout the year so keep an eye out and remember that this list may not be accurate do to the always changing marketing plans of restaurants. Hopefully this list helps you find a good deal and a place to take your family to eat for a discounted price and if you play it right, it may actually be cheaper for your family to eat out than staying in on certain nights. Also keep in mind that several restaurants that have buffets allow children 3 & under to eat FREE with a purchase of adult meal. Restaurant rules may vary by city and state so make sure to call and ask before you make the trip! You can also always check offers.com to see if the restaurant has any other offers going on and if you sign up for the restaurant's club they will send you special deals and discounts throughout the year and around your birthday but thats another blog for another day. Feel free to share any other restaurants that offer free or cheap kid's meals below as I'm sure I missed a few!

Pencil Door Hanger

Pencil Door Hanger, Pallet Decor, Decor, Classroom Decor, DIY Door Hanger, Pallet craft, teacher appreciation, teacher appreciation gift, teacher gift, door hanger, personalized door hanger

My mom is a teacher, my brother is a teacher and my husband is a teacher so I got a head start on Christmas gifts this year and made them all these cute Personalized Pencil Door Hangers for their classrooms.

Supplies:

  • Pallet or any flat Wood*
  • Tools: Saw, Sander and Drill
  • Acrylic Paint: Yellow, Grey, Pink, and Black; Optional: White
  • Sponge Paint Brush
  • Thin Paint Brush
  • Spray Clear Gloss or Mod Podge
  • Twine
  • Scissors
  • Optional: print out a cute saying and packaging tape

UPDATE: I made more pencils as teacher gifts and had to buy wood from Lowes. We bought a piece that was 1 x 5 x 6 for about $8. This will make three 20" Pencils with a little left over. They must of raised the price because it cost five something when we bought it for our Growth Chart Ruler. Also this wood absorbs the paint more then the pallet wood did so you will need to apply a few coats of paint but the pencils turned out a lot better. *pictured at bottom

How To:

1. Using a saw, cut about a 20" slab off a pallet.

2. Sketch were you want your pencil point to be and cut it with the saw.

3. Using a sander, sand the wood. Make sure to sand all of the edges to remove any loose/pointed pieces from cutting it. Remember it will be in a classroom and you don't want any students accidentally getting a splinter from touching it. You can use sand paper if needed, it will just take longer.

4. Once the wood is ready it is time to paint it. I started by outlining where I wanted the yellow paint to start and stop. Then I filled it in with yellow. You may need to apply two coats of yellow since it is a light color.

5. I then made a grey line to represent the metal on a real pencil. My grey line was the width of my foam paint brush.

6. Paint the rest of the end a light pink to for the eraser.

7. Use your black paint to paint the point of the pencil. I rounded the point on my pencils but you can make it straight or jagged if you would prefer. I also added a small white line on the tip on my pencil to make the black stand out more but you don't have to. Let Dry.

8. Once your paint is dry you can paint on a teacher's name. The acrylic paint I used dried pretty fast so I didn't have to wait for mine to dry. I free handed the names I put on my pencils. If you aren't comfortable doing that you can use a pencil and lightly write the name/font on the pencil to make sure it fits then go over it with black paint. I used black paint and a thin paint brush for my names. You can use whatever color or font you prefer thou. Let Dry.

UPDATE: I recently personalized the pencils with a black paint pen and it was so much easier to personalize and it didn't take as much time.

9. After my pencils had dried, I had my husband drill two small holes at the top so I could hang them. You can drill the holes before or after you paint your pencils.

10. Once the paint is dry and the holes have been drilled I applied a clear gloss to the front of the pencil to lock in the paint. It also added a nice shiny finish to the pencil. You can use any type of gloss finish, satin finish, mod podge or just a plain waterproof finish to lock in your paint. Let Dry.

11. I used twine to hang my pencils. I doubled the twine to make it thicker, stuck it through the drill holes and tied a knot.

12. I then found a cute saying that had to do with pencils, printed it out and used clear packaging tape to secure it to the back of my pencil. This is of coarse optional, but adds to it!

The hardest part of making theses was cutting and sanding the wood followed by not messing up when I painted the names. Overall I think this was a pretty easy craft to make but that was because I enjoyed making it. I can't wait to give theses as gifts and see what everybody thinks about them. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!

UPDATE: Below is a picture of a few pencils I made using the wood from Lowes. It cost more per pencil but the pencils looked a lot nicer, plus I was having trouble finding thick pallet's that were long enough without having nail holes in them so I think I will be sticking to Lowe's wood.

Couples Baby Shower - Diaper & Beer Party

Couples Baby Shower, Diaper & Beer Party, Baby Shower, Diaper Party, Couples Shower, Beer and Diaper party Beer and Diaper Baby Shower, Guys baby shower, Family Baby shower, beer cake, a baby is brewing, baby shower food ideas, diaper party food, diaper party food ideas, Diaper and Beer Party, Diaper and beer baby shower, baby is brewing
When we found out we were pregnant with our third child in less than three years we decided to throw ourselves a Diaper & Beer Party. We already had all the necessities for a baby along with plenty of baby toys and clothes since we already had a boy and girl but we did not have diapers. Anybody that has ever had a baby and bought diapers knows that they can add up fast so what better way to celebrate the arrival of our newest addition than by celebrating with friends and family and having a Diaper & Beer Party.

The Diaper & Beer Party took place at the end of July 2017, about two in a half months before our little one made his debut. I know I'm a little late posting this but I forgot to take pictures so had to gather some from the family so picture credit goes out to our family, thanks!

There are a couple ways you can go about having a Diaper & Beer Party. In our case, we invited everyone to our house, grilled out, talked and played lawn games such as corn hole and beers-bee. Other ways include inviting your guest to dinner at a restaurant such as Buffalo Wild Wings or Casa so your guests can order foods and drink as they please and it's cheaper on your part. You can also have a party similar to ours but instead of just playing lawn games, plan a beer olympics competition for your guest that want to participate. Of coarse the mommy to be won't be drinking but she can be the referee for those close calls and remember, don't drink and drive!

GAMES
We only had the first two lawn games but there are several other games you can play such as:

  • Corn Hole
  • Beers-bee
  • Guess How Many
  • Words for the Wee Hours
  • Beer Olympics  - The Best Sucker Contest is perfect
  • Pacifier Beer Pong
  • Blindfolded Diaper Changing
  • Matching Baby Socks Relay
  • Pin the Sperm on the Egg OR Pin the Diaper/Bottle/Pacifier on the Baby
  • "The Price is Right" baby item addition
  • Bib, Onesie, or Monogram letter decoration station
  • Guess the food - baby food or melted candy bars in diapers
  • Jumbo Jenga
  • Tic Tac Toe
  • Twister
  • Ring Toss
  • Ladder Golf
  • Hoarse Shoes
  • Card/Board Games

You can play any game you prefer. All you have to do is search baby shower games or yard games and several different ideas will pop up.

FOOD & DESSERTS:
As far as food goes, my husband grilled out and both our mothers brought some sides. We also made some potato salad and desserts for the party. Needless to say we had more than enough food.  Here's a list of what we had:

  • Burgers
  • Hotdogs
  • Toppings & Condiments - Pickles, Tomato, Lettuce, Cheese, Mayo, Mustard, Ketchup
  • Baked Beans
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Chips, Pretzels, Cheese Balls
  • Fries in a cup
  • Pretzel Bowl & Cheese *not pictured
  • Vegetable Tray - Carrots, Cucumber, Celery
  • Fruit Bowl - Watermelon, Strawberries, Cantaloupe, Grapes, Blueberries
  • Potato Salad
  • Pretzel Salad
  • Puppy Chow
  • Rice Krispie Treats
  • Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Dirt Pudding

We originally were going to have all appetizers such as chicken wings, pretzels, mozzarella sticks, etc. Basically food that goes good with beer but we weren't sure it would be enough food for everybody so decided to grill out instead.

We had the basic beverages such as:

  • Sweet Tea
  • Water
  • 2Liters
  • Juice Boxes for the kids
  • "Mommy Mocktail" - Blue Hawaiian Punch, 7-Up & Raspberry Sorbet
  • Beer

The Diaper & Beer Party was BYOB since everybody likes different beverages but we did have a beer cake and a few different beers incase anybody forgot.

The Beer Cake was a huge hit. Since we were hosting a  Diaper & Beer Party and the nursery had a whale theme I came up with a cute saying for the cake, "Baby Lincoln is BREWing so lets have a WHALE of a good time!" You can check out my blog, Beer Can Cake Tutorial, for directions and more pictures of the beer cake.

DECORATIONS
We didn't really decorate as much as we usually do since the majority of the time our guest would be outside but we did use red and blue table clothes, had a tent set up for shade and made a beer cake with whales on it for our table decoration. If you want to decorate, go for it!

As far as our Diaper & Beer Party went, we all had a good time and got tons of diapers for our little guy. We even got a cool double stroller and some cloth diapers - they make the best burp cloths. Hopefully this blog gave you a few ideas for throwing a simple couple's baby shower. Feel free to check out some of the pictures below!

Ocean Beach Cake Tutorial

A friend of our's wanted a beach cake for their child's birthday and couldn't find one they liked that include a dolphin in the design so I gave it my best shot and this is what I came up with...

Ocean Beach Cake Tutorial, Ocean Beach Cake, Ocean cake, beach cake, DIY cake, cake tutorial, homemade cake, homemade beach cake, how to decorate a cake, how to decorate a beach cake, how to frost a sunset, cake decorating tips, easy beach cake, easy DIY beach cake, easy ocean cake, easy DIY ocean cake, ocean theme cake, beach theme cake with dolphin, beach birthday cake, ocean birthday cake, ocean beach birthday cake, DIY frosting palm tree, cake decorating

I'm still new to the whole cake decorating thing but I think it turned out pretty good!

To make your own Ocean Beach Cake you first need to bake your cake and let it cool. Once it is cooled, place it on a serving board and cover the cake in a thin layer of white frosting - "crumb layer"

TIP: Instead of buying a cardboard base for the cakes, I make my own. I cut up diaper boxes or other cardboard boxes a little bigger than the cake size and cover them with Reynold's Aluminum Wrap.

Make your frosting colors. In this case I used blue, yellow, orange, brown, green, and grey. I bought vanilla frosting and used food coloring to make the frosting the color I wanted. Since I needed the most blue, I bought a jar of blue vanilla frosting they has in the store to save time on mixing it myself.

TIP: Dump the jar of frosting into a mixing bowl and whip it with a mixer until it becomes smooth. Mixing the frosting makes it easier to work with, easier to spread on the cake, and it gives you a little more frosting than you had before.

Decorating the Cake:

1. Create the Water - Add the blue frosting in the middle of the cake and make it as smooth as you can. It's ok if it's not perfect because it will give it the effect of waves.

2. Add a yellow sun.

flat, plastic, turner spatula
3. Create the Sunset - Add blobs of yellow and orange frosting randomly where you want your sunset to be. Use the back of a flat, plastic, turner spatula to smooth and blend the yellow and orange frosting together. Don't over blend it or it will all become one color.

4. Smash a couple Graham Cracker in a ziplock bag or food processor and sprinkle them on the bottom of the cake below the blue frosting to make it look like sand. Three Graham Crackers should be enough.

5. Make a Palm Tree or two with the Brown and Green frosting.
I used a #12 tip for the tree base and a #5  tip for the palm leaves.

6. Add a Dolphin. I hand frosted the dolphin using a #5 tip.

7. Add the boarder, sand/water separator to look like crashing waves, and words to the cake if you want using any frosting tip you want. I used a #22 tip for the boarder and a #5 for the sand/water separator and the words.

I'm still working on how to write better on cakes, plus the frosting wasn't coming out right but other than that I think the cake turned out pretty well and the family was very satisfied! Decorate the cake however you prefer; you can add birds to the sky or sea creatures in the water or on the sand, just make sure you leave room for words and candles. Hopefully this tutorial comes in handy for at least creating a sunset!

My younger brother married his high school love December 30, 2016; what better way to end the year if you ask me!!! My husband and I decided to make my brother and his wife a personalized coat hanger. This was inspired by the coat hanger on the wall by our front door that has a sign hanging above it with our last name on it. Shortly after we got married and bought a house, one of the things missing was a coat closet so we purchase a coat hanger from Target to hang by our front door. When they announced the wedding date, I thought what better gift. It is creative, useful and meaningful. The coat hanger was the first gift (that I'm aware of) that had their new last name and wedding date on it! The personalized coat hanger is unique and makes a great keepsake. It can hold coats, hoodies, purses and even your keys. Find out how we made the personalized coat hanger below!

The new Mr. & Mrs. Mears pictured to the right.

Supplies

How To

1. Cut and sand a piece of wood the length you want it to be. We used an old 6x24 piece of fence wood. The wood can be any length you want.

2. Stain the wood. Let Dry
You can also paint to wood a solid color if you don't like the way stained wood looks.

Stain Color Used: Colonial Maple

3. Decide how you want to personalize the coat rack. Some possibilities are:

  • The (last name) Family
  • Mr. & Mrs. (last name)
  • The (last name) Home
  • The (last name)'s
  • Welcome
  • HOME
  • LOVE
  • FAMILY
  • You can add "est. (year established)" to any of the sayings!

4. Write OR Print out the saying in the font and size you want to use.

5. Transfer the words onto the wood. You can do this several different ways. In this case, I placed my words on top of the wood and centered them. I used a ball-point pen and gently traced over the words thus creating a small outline in the wood. If you look closely you can see the outline in the picture below. Make sure to leave room for the coat hooks.

*** Check out Step 4 in my blog, Growth Chart Ruler Tutorial, for another way you can transfer the words onto the wood.

6. Fill in the words with white paint. Let Dry.
I used a white sharpie paint pen to fill in the words. You can use any color you want to match the color of your wood.

7. Optional: Outline the words with a different color. Let Dry.
I used a silver sharpie paint pen to outline the words. This helped the words stand out and helped tie the words into the color of the hooks. You can use any color you want to outline the words in.

8. Cover the wood with a sealer. You can use a gloss spray such as Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover Clear Gloss Spray, Mod Podge or a wood sealer. The sealer will help seal the paint and make the coat hanger last longer. Depending on what sealer you choose, it will also add a shine to the wood.

9. Add coat hooks.
I added four coat hooks to the wood. You can use any kind (style/color) of coat hook you prefer. Make sure to evenly space out the hooks.

I recommend using four to six hooks depending on the style of hook and length of the wood. I used four silver hooks I bought from Meijer. You can use any color hook you want to match the colors of the paint. The hooks usually come in white, black, gold and silver. You can also use dresser draw knobs instead of hooks if you prefer. You can buy coat hooks online or in most chain stores such as Target, Lowes, etc. The coat hooks vary from $1.00 to $5.00 a piece depending on the style you buy.

10. Add two wall hangers to the back of the wood.
I used two sawtooth hangers and attached them to the back. You can choose any hanging technique you prefer. Keep in mind that this is a coat hanger and some coats and purses can be heavy so you want to make sure it is secure.

*Picture to the right is a sawtooth hanger incase you didn't know what they looked like!

11. Wrap it up and give the personalized coat rack you worked so hard on as a gift; or maybe you made if for yourself and want to hang it by your front door for all to see!

The personalized coat rack isn't to difficult to make and for me was only the cost of the coat hooks being that I already had the rest of the supplies. The personalized coat rack is a great gift for a newly engaged or married couple. It is also a meaningful gift because it shows you care by taking the time to make a gift instead of buy a gift. Every coat rack is unique in it's own way due to color scheme and personalization. You can personalize the coat rack to say anything you want. If you want to make one for your home you can use words such as HOME, FAMILY or WELCOME on it instead. Be creative and make it your own. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Happy crafting!

My son recently celebrated his second Birthday and for his Birthday we decided to have a Thomas the Train theme, Chugga Chugga TWO TWO!!!! Originally it was just going to be a train theme but we had several Thomas train toys so just decided to make it a Thomas the Train theme and use the toy trains as decoration. When I throw a themed party I like to make as much of the decorations as possible to save on money and I  try to do my best to make everything match the theme. Here is what I ended up doing for my son's second Birthday.

Food Table:
I tired to make the food table look like a train on train tracks and filled aluminum trays with different snack foods and dips to represent what train cars carry. I designed labels, printed them off and taped them to cocktail stirs so they would stick out above the food. There were eight different aluminum trays that made up two trains.

Cake:
Once again I decided to make the Birthday cake and I think it turned out pretty cute. I let my son pick the cake flavor and he picked out chocolate cake. I decorated the cake with blue vanilla frosting. I then used black and red frosting to draw the train tracks around the cake and personalize the cake. I added a small Thomas the Train toy we had and a candle to represent the second "two" in the theme's saying, "Chugga Chugga TWO TWO!!!"

Decorations:
I made a couple different decorations for my sons party to save on money and they turned out pretty cute. There are tons of ways you can decorate for your party so decorate with what you like the best. You can buy Thomas the Train or regular train themed decorations or make your own like I did, whatever is easier!

The Party Invitation I Designed
Invitations, Signs & Labels: I created train tracks in Illustrator on my computer, searched for a free Thomas the Train image and created the party invites, signs and labels to match. I sent the party invitations our via online messaging to save on postage since it was a family event. I then printed off  the signs and food labels and taped them up. I had a sign above the beverages the read "Fueling Station" and a sign above the gift table that read "Luggage Drop Off - Logan will be happy to take it off your hands".
      * We did not have goodie bags since a lot of people couldn't make it but if you do, you can have a sign that reads "Baggage Claim".

I cut black paper into several pieces and glued it together to make it look like train tracks. I found some free train clipart, printed it out and set it on the table in the middle of the tracks. I set the aluminum food trays out to look like a train and put a toy train in the front. I cut out black circles and taped them to the aluminum food trays to resemble train wheels.

Entrance: The morning of the party I went outside and decorated our entrance way with chalk. I drew a Thomas the Train and railroad tracks leading up to our front door. I also wrote "All Aboard" by the entrance and "The Logan Express".

Picture Train: I used the same free Thomas image that is on the invites and labels and printed it off. I then found ten pictures I liked of my son from the last two years and laid them out in order behind the Thomas print out. I cut one long black strip of paper and twenty blue wheels. I glued the wheels to the black strip of paper spaced accordingly due to the direction and spacing of the pictures. I used a marker to make the wheels look more like wheels. My husband and I taped everything to the wall to make it look like a train.

My son's second Birthday party was a success and I think everything turned out super cute! This was the first time we ran out of cake so it's safe to say it was a hit.  My son was blessed with several toys, clothes and bathing suits this year. There are tons of different ways and ideas out there to decorate for a train party, but these are just a few I did. I was planning on making some trains out of diaper boxes and paper for the kids to play with but I was short on time so unfortunately didn't get around to it. I hope you enjoyed my son's Thomas the Train Birthday Party - Chugga Chugga TWO TWO!!! pictures and that they help inspire you when planning your child's Train Party!
