Name Block Party Decoration

For my daughter's first Birthday, Pink Elephant Birthday Party,  I made Name Blocks as a party decoration. My son is about to turn one so I thought it was only fair if I made him some name blocks for his Birthday party. I didn't have my blog at the time of my daughters first Birthday so I am going to do this tutorial using my son's name blocks. The name blocks are pretty self explanatory but just incase I'll go ahead and tell you how I made them.

Supplies:

  • Any Color Paper - I used paper from an art paper roll but wrapping paper will work just fine
  • White Construction Paper or White Computer Paper
  • Boxes - I used Beer boxes because I liked the size of them but you can use any box that is convenient for you
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Glue Stick
  • Pencil or Print out of letters for the name

How To:

1. Cut the colored paper to fit your box and wrap your box like you would wrap a gift. Secure all the sides with tape.

NOTE: If you use a light color such as pink you may be able to see the through the color once you wrap your box, especially if the box has a design on it like the beer boxes. I taped a piece of computer paper to the side of the box I planned on putting the letters on and then wrapped the box with the paper so you could no longer see the box design.

2. Draw your letters on white paper and cut them out. You can print your letters out and trace them or just print them out and cut them out if you prefer.

3. Glue your letters onto the wrapped blocks with a glue stick and your done!

These Name Blocks are cheap and easy to make. You can make them in any color and you can spell anything you want, you don't have to stick to a name. The Name Blocks are great for any occasion whether it's a birthday party, baby shower, school event or a bridal shower. They make for a great party decoration or photo prop. Once the party has ended you can keep them as a decoration in your child's room, re-use them for a different name or word, trash them or let you children play with them, since kids tend to love boxes, and throw them away once your children have destroyed them. The benefit of cheap decorations is it's okay if it gets destroyed because it cost little, if anything to make.

I kept my daughter's blocks in her room and used them for a picture when she turned two to show her growth. They have lasted over a year besides my son pulling at the letters but I just re-glued it and it worked fine! I plan on keeping my son's in his room too until they get destroyed or we need the space.

Below is my daughter next to her name blocks for her first and second Birthday. The tutu was in storage so it isn't as fluffy but the name blocks is a great way to show how much your child has grown from year to year if you keep them!

Decorative Beer Box Gifts: Blue Moon

My second post ever on Daniz Designz was Decorative Beer Box Gifts for Him. This post has really taken off the last few weeks with Valentine's Day approaching and is currently my second highest viewed blog. Decorative Beer Boxes is a Valentine's tradition I have started with my husband. This will be the fourth year I have made a Decorative Beer Box for my husband, the fifth year giving him beer as part of his gift and I will continue to make him a Decorative Beer Box for years to come. He knows it and is fine with it because he loves beer and has no idea what brand or saying I will give him next.

I recently brainstormed sayings and came up with over ten sayings to go with over ten different beers so you can look forward my future Valentine's Day Decorative Beer Boxes but for now I'm keeping them a secret so I won't ruin future gifts.

For Valentine's 2016 I asked my husband if there were any specific beers he wanted or wanted to try. He came up with a list so I chose a beer off his list and came up with a saying. They didn't have what I was originally thinking but it all worked out. This year he will be getting Blue Moon: First Peach Ale. It's an early season release and there were only two left so I lucked out! I explained in my previous blog,  Decorative Beer Box Gifts for Him, how I made the Decorative Beer Boxes but this time I'm going to go ahead and do a tutorial with pictures.

Supplies:

  • 6-pack of beer
  • Colorful Sharpies
  • Construction Paper
  • White Computer Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick *not pictured
  • Hot Glue Gun and Hot Glue Stick

How To:

1.  First you need to come up with a saying to go with your beer. You can come up with a saying then buy your beer or buy a beer and try to come up with a saying. I've constructed a list of several sayings you can use to decorate a Blue Moon beer box. Feel free to use one of these sayings or come up with your own.

Blue Moon sayings:

"I love you to the MOON and back." *decorative beer box picture is below
"I love you to the MOON and back, to infinity and beyond, forever and ever."
"You are my sun, my MOON, and all my stars." - E.E. Cummings
"I'd orbit the MOON for you."
"Every time I look at the MOON, all I see is you!"
"I'm over the MOON for you." or "I'm over the MOON for you, Valentine."
"You're my MOON, my light, and my whole world."

"Once in a BLUE MOON you find a love this true." *decorative beer box picture is below
"Once in a BLUE MOON you find a ___ (dad, father, husband) as awesome as you!"
"Once in a BLUE MOON someone comes into your life you will never forget"
"Once in a BLUE MOON someone wonderful comes along."
"Once in a BLUE MOON someone will take your breathe away."

"Roses are Red, Violets are BLUE, aren't you glad I love you!"
"Roses are Red, Violets are BLUE, I'll never love someone the way I love you."
"Roses are Red, Violets are BLUE, love never crossed my mind until I met you."
"Roses are Red, Violets are BLUE, I found the love of my life, that's you!"
"Roses are Red, Violets are BLUE, the best part of my life is you!"
"I'd be BLUE without you as my Valentine."

2. Using the sharpies, write your saying on the white computer paper and cut it out. Mount it onto construction paper using a glue stick and cut the words out.

3. Create any other decoration you may want. In this case I made a rocket ship and a blue moon. In the past I made fruit to match the saying/beer. You can decorate you beer with hearts, just the saying or any thing you want.

4. Figure out where you want to place everything and hot glue it to the beer box. It is easier to hot glue to pieces if the beer is out of the box and the box is laying flat.

5. Put the beer back in the box and give it to your significant other on Valentine's Day!

There are a ton of different ways you can decorate your beer box and I listed several other sayings you could use above. A Decorative Beer Box is a great gift for your husband, your boyfriend, or your dad. If your wife or girlfriend is a beer drinker I'm sure she would love it to. I hope your significant other loves this gift as much as I know mine will!

Cake Decorating: Coloring Page Transfer Tutorial

If you have ever bought a cake from a bakery you know how expensive it can be and you have to choose from one of the bakery's designs because they either don't have permission to make certain characters or don't carry the decorating package for that specific theme. To get the theme you want for your child's Birthday you either have to find a person that makes fancy fondant or buttercream cakes and charges a ton of money for a small cake or you have to Do It Yourself.

I have made quite a few cakes in my lifetime, I even use to make my own Birthday Cakes just for fun. To save money I have started making my own children's Birthday cakes. My daughter isn't old enough to have a favorite charter so her cakes have been a little more simple for now but I have made a couple theme/character cakes for my husband's co-workers. They aren't the fanciest cakes but the kids seem to love them because they have what they asked for on them and thats all that matters.

The Coloring Page Transfer Cakes are fun and your children will love them. You can make any design you want to make from your child's favorite cartoon character to their favorite sports team. You can use a coloring book page, draw your own picture, or design your own picture using different pictures you find on the internet. The Coloring Page Transfer Cakes can be very time consuming though depending on what design you choose so make sure you have around three hours set aside to make your cake.

Coloring Page Transfer Tutorial

Supplies:

  • Image - Coloring page, drawing, or design
  • Wax Paper
  • Tape - I use masking tape because it comes off easier
  • Glass - I use the glass from a Dollar Tree 8x10 Frame
  • Piping Bags, Ziploc Bags or Storage Bags - I use small food storage bags
  • Piping Tips
  • Food Coloring
  • Tub Icing or Homemade Icing
  • Mixer, bowls, and spoons

Directions:

Step 2: Layer the Image, Glass, and Wax Paper

1. Print off or draw the image you want to use. Make sure to reverse your image before you print it off. The image will be mirrored because you are tracing it on the glass and flipping it so reversing the image is important especially if you are using a logo or words.

2. Trim and Tape your image to the back side of the glass. Cover the glass with wax paper and secure with tape. It should be layered with your image, then glass, then wax paper.

3. Whip your icing using a mixer until it is smooth, this helps make it easier to work with. Divide the icing into bowls depending on what color and how much of that color you need. Add food coloring and mix till you get the colors you need. Put the piping tips on and fill your piping bags with icing.

Step 4: Outline the image
NOTE: If you are using a Ziploc or Storage bag, cut a small hole in the corner and add the piping tip. If you do not have piping tips you can cut a super tiny hole in the corner. It will still work but may come out faster than it would using a piping tip.

4. Start outlining your image with a dark color icing. Make sure to use the smallest tip you have (#1 piping tip). This will be what you see when you flip it onto the cake so make sure you outline everything you want to see.

5. Fill in the rest of the image with the icing colors that you want. It's kind of like coloring with icing!  Be careful when covering the outline not to push your tip down and mess it up. You can use any piping tip you prefer, it's sometimes easier to fill in big areas using a bigger piping tip.

NOTE: Hold your image up to the light to make sure you filled in everything. If you can see light shining through add a little more icing or use a toothpick to push the icing together.

6. Once you have finished "coloring" your image with the icing, add another layer of icing. You will not see this layer so you can use any color you have extra of. This will thicken your image, giving it more height from the cake. It will also help combine your whole image, making it easier to peel from the wax paper without breaking.

Step 5 & 6: Filling in the image
7. Place your icing image on the glass in the freezer. I leave it in the freezer overnight but it should only take about 20 minutes. You know the icing has been in the freezer long enough when it hardens.

While your icing is in the freezer you can go ahead and ice your cake if you haven't already or clean up the mess you probably made.

8. Take the icing image out of the freezer, un-tape it from the glass and flip it onto your cake. Gently push the image down so it sticks to the cake and peel back the wax paper. Make sure to remove the wax paper as quick as you can before the icing begins to soften or it will stick to the wax paper and ruin your image. I have had to use a small kitchen knife to help carefully remove the icing when it has stuck to the wax paper.

9. Finish decorating your cake by adding a border and piping on a message. Ta-da you are done and your kids will love it!!!

This cake tutorial is for a Hotel Transylavania cake. The little girl I made the cake for wanted a cake with Mavis and the hotel on it and this is what I came up with. This image was more simple than some of the other Coloring Page Transfer Cakes I've made because it only consisted of four colors. The more detail and colors, the harder and longer the cake design will take. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and Happy Baking!

Below is the first Coloring Page Transfer Cake I made. The image turn out great but the words are a different story. The boy I made it for and his family loved it so much they asked me to make another cake for them though!
